The last couple of years have been a whirlwind for the entertainment industry, with streaming platforms growing rapidly, watching fragmented and, of course, COVID upending everything. The time young consumers spend in quarantine in 2020 has increased their entertainment needs and desires, creating a huge trend for viewers and the industry. But according to the data, these years also show that content preferences are shifting between Gen Z and Millennials.

Media Consumption Monitors measures the entertainment behavior of young consumers on a quarterly basis, from the platforms they watch to the types of video content they watch weekly. And of course, we cannot ignore the impact of TikTok. The platform has made music-focused videos more popular by combining music and video in a new way. It’s no coincidence that the past two years have seen massive growth of the platform among younger consumers and a parallel rise in the popularity of music video content.
Another category that saw growth was Gaming/eSports, which increased from 28% to 32%. While this is a smaller increase, it should be noted that games in general became even more popular with younger consumers last year: the gaming report found that 94% of 13-39 year olds play video games to some extent, while 46% watch others to play video games. Video games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Among Us are becoming hangout hot spots, while other game-related platforms like Roblox, Fortnite, Discord, and Twitch have also grown in popularity. But it’s clear that it’s not just individual games and gaming platforms that have skyrocketed in popularity, but gaming video content as well.
True Crime increased from 20% in 2019 to 26% in 2021, while Thriller/Thriller also increased slightly. But interestingly, when we dig into the groups driving viewership growth for these genres, it’s mostly young women who are driving it:

Music content, thrillers/thrillers, games/eSports, documentaries, legal/crime dramas and true crime are attracting more viewers than young women between 2019 and 2021.
