What To Wear On An Interview Female – What to wear to a job interview as an engineer is a question I was asked to address in my guest lecture by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Society of Women Engineers. This post is a short summary of the main elements of my talk. Read how to best dress for an engineering interview.

While preparing for my presentation, I discovered some very interesting things about appropriate work attire in various fields, which I will share with you in next weeks blog. There are clear differences in dress if you are, for example, a civil engineer or a software engineer, or if you go on a tour as a female engineer.

Although the dress code varies in different fields of engineering, it indicates a similar dress code during job interviews (introduction) and meetings with clients. Adhering to the dress code is so important that many top engineering schools even have a dedicated webpage, and some even have a Pinterest board about what to wear to an interview!

However, looking at the offerings, women’s clothing is pretty boring. Wearing this cookie cutter outfit can convey the message that the wearer is not creative. The latter is not an advertising bell for work that is related to creation – engineering.

About all expectations. Engineering is still a male-dominated field. Therefore, customers have expectations about the engineering department and its employees. As a result, they really expect a man to show up in a suit, shirt, polished shoes, leather briefcase and tie to look like a businessman. Fine,

On average, about 70% of an engineer’s work is meetings and work with clients. Most of the engineers I know work in government, government, academia, apparel, or the food industry. These fields have relatively less customer contact than the engineering average.

A tailored suit is a good choice. Swap the pointy pumps that usually come with pantsuits for oxford shoes with heels no higher than 1 inch (2.5 cm). This height is such that you can still climb the ladder during the interview if needed. A wedge is a safer alternative, easier to slip on, and allows for more height than low-heeled oxfords.

A pearl necklace is a woman’s tie. Make sure the length is short enough not to get caught in the gears (which is why male engineers wear ties).

Get a men’s watch. This sends the message that meeting deadlines and being on time is a high priority for you. Go for a minimalist style like Nordgreen watches, because minimalist design works for everyone (use my 15% discount code HLSTYLE).

Wash the sleeves (see the first photo). It’s stylish and sends the message that you’re willing to get your hands dirty, that is. job done

Get a large textured leather bag that can fit your laptop, iPad and/or folders. This snippet indicates that you are willing to work from home to complete the task on time. If your business requires you to go outside a lot, you can have suitable shoes (for example, engineering boots) in your bag.

Tip: If your interview includes a site visit, keep these shoes in the trunk of your car to change shoes.

Choose neutral shades for a trouser suit, shoes and a leather bag. Express your style by choosing a blouse or shirt. No transparency, please. A silk or cashmere turtleneck is a good alternative to a button-down shirt or blouse in colder climates. Wear bare, opaque socks or stockings that match the colors of your clothes or shoes. In addition to styling non-boring outfits in all neutral tones.

Wear a classic coat that’s short enough to not get in the way when you need to grab something or when you need to climb. A heavyweight was made for climbing. In the summer, a classic trench coat.

If your application is for engineering that does not involve climbing, you can wear a straight skirt with a slit in the back. Avoid skirts with side or front skirts as they show too much leg when you are sitting. Also, make sure the skirt fits well, meaning it doesn’t ride up when you sit. Also, it should reach your knees when you are sitting. Wide or very long skirts can catch on moving equipment. Therefore, they are not suitable.

Wear motorcycle pants or shorts under your skirt to avoid making a scene when you climb the metal stairs. Make sure cyclists don’t appear while you’re seated. However, it works for jobs that require lab coats or software development, for example.

If you have long hair, style it so that the helmet still fits. This hairstyle should look professional when you take off the helmet.

Try not to wear anything that makes you uncomfortable.
