According to Talia Coren, founder of Work Week Lunch, food doesn’t have to be 100 percent healthy to be healthy. The blogger lost 10 pounds by following the 80/20 rule, which involves eating 80 percent healthy foods and 20 percent other healthy foods.

The 25-year-old says she put on a few pounds in college. Her eating habits took a turn for the worse after she started working at a New York news agency where “pizza days” and free badges were the norm. Losing weight seems impossible.

“If you don’t eat well, your energy level goes down, and that’s what I learned,” Coren said. “I was really uncomfortable. I didn’t like the way my clothes fit. I didn’t feel good about myself.”

Coren tried many different diets, none of which helped him lose weight. Exercise didn’t help either. In 2015, he learned about the 80/20 rule while doing research online and decided to give it a try.

Coren uses the 80/20 rule as a “weekly time” goal. You eat about 21 meals a week, 80 percent of which are about 17 meals. He chooses the “whole day” approach, which means that 80 percent of his daily food is healthy.

“If 20 percent [of what you eat] each day is sweet potato fries, that adds up,” he explains.

But the approach of the whole week makes him hold back. About 17 of her meals a week are healthy, while only four are unhealthy.

Koren started cooking at home. Her healthy diet includes whole grains, lean proteins, fruits and vegetables, and nutrient-dense carbohydrates.

He decided to keep the dishes a little healthier when eating with friends. But she is careful not to choose too unhealthy menu items.

“I love Mediterranean food,” he says. So I’ll have some fried falafel, and maybe there’ll be coleslaw – mayo – that kind of thing, where it’s not totally unhealthy, but it’s not too strong.

Never use your 20 percent “less healthy” diet as an excuse to overeat, she warns.

“Just because you’re going to eat a 20 percent pizza doesn’t mean you’re going to overdo it,” he said. “It just means a little care.”

“Preparing food is a big reason why I can stay consistent, because no matter what food or plan you make, you have to prepare yourself,” he said.

Blogger meals are prepared twice a week. They cook Monday to Wednesday Sunday and Thursday to Sunday Wednesday. For example, you prepare broccoli, sweet potato and salmon and divide them into three meals for the next three days. He says that this ready-made food makes him stop making unhealthy excuses.

“You want to bypass your brain and have healthy food in front of you, so you don’t have to think about the solution—it’s there,” says Coren.

“This is what I call my happy weight,” she says. “I’m not trying to lose too much, and I don’t want to gain too much.”

The blogger says the weight loss is “amazing,” but it’s the result of focusing on healthy lifestyle changes, not obesity.

Calabrese also offers exercise modifications, so even now, at age 78 and nursing an injury, Carney can exercise safely.

Although Carney lost about 60 pounds in his early 70s, he recently suffered an injury and gained more weight. In addition to walking slowly, he used to eat mindlessly in front of the TV and eat sweets, which made the weight go back up.
