S Hairstyles That Are Trending Again
We blame the revival of Gucci’s ’70s hairstyles. Since Alessandro Michele took over the Italian fashion house in 2015, we’ve seen 70s-style hairstyles, curls and long hippie looks on the catwalk, with more and more stars rocking feathered, free-spirited braids. Take Billie Eilish’s blonde hair or Miley Cyrus’ rocket: We welcome this fun, glamorous decade back into our lives because it truly was one of hair’s greatest eras.
Diana Ross rocked a disco-inspired afro, and there are plenty of gorgeous chicks to take inspiration from. Except that these styles are very current even today. We think you can use them the way you did then, and they’ll look great too. We’ve picked 20 of our favorite looks to prove our point about how great this decade was for hair.
Browse our past picks for great ’70s hairstyle inspiration to kick off your Saturday night bash.
According to celebrity colorist Jeremy Tardo, the last “cool kid” hairstyle of the era was the cropped cut, and in the ’70s, the walk was sharp and defined. “This cricket has been built and renovated in many ways since its inception,” he said. Billie Eilish’s platinum bangs took the internet by storm in 2021, and we’re loving the layered look with smart curtain rods.
The 20 Best ’70s Hairstyles To Try In 2023
As a result, everyone loved this hairstyle in this decade (and in the 80s as well). In fact, this iconic hairstyle is still popular today. To recreate this look, you’ll need a good barrel brush (we love Drybar’s Double Pint Round Ceramic Brush).
The blonde fringe (AKA Birkin bangs) is a smart French girl cut that we don’t know about, but we love how it looks on Jordan. According to celebrity stylist Michael Duenas, the current version is slightly longer so it can be pushed to the side or worn in the front. “The stylist goes from the top of the hair to the back of the head,” she says. “How thick should the stroke be where the comb is raised.
If you thought Molak’s resurrection day would never come, you’re not alone. Still, 70s madness can be polished and feel fresh. Miley Cyrus is constantly keeping us on our toes, leading the way with amazing new looks that look like they’re going to explode in showrooms and on Pinterest.
The floors from the 70s were almost identical. On one hand you have loose layers all over and on the other hand your hair is almost the same length. “Modern bobs are blow-dried and straightened with flat irons or very light hair,” explains Duenas. “In the ’70s, most of them were circular brushed. “You had more volume and highlights.” Duenas recommends using Volume and Aloxxi Essential 7 Hair Restoration Serum ($37) for thin hair and Aloxxi Thickening Serum ($37) for thick hair.
Layered Hairstyles And Shaggy Haircut Ideas For 2022
Quick question: Do you follow Goldie Hawn on Instagram? If you haven’t, we recommend that you do so immediately. Hawn has always been great, and while it comes down to her amazing acting skills, her iconic ’70s hairstyle doesn’t hurt. Celebrity stylist Corey Aaron Scott explains how to create the perfect beehive: “Blow dry and blow dry to add volume.” To get that extra bounce, follow the rollers in half-inch sections and don’t forget to curl your hair.
Duenas explains that while braids were all the rage in the ’90s, the ’70s wanted to keep them low, loosely bunched, light, airy and not too slick. For reconstruction, he suggests starting with a rough or blow dry, then building up the middle section. “Comb all the hair from the crown of the back to the sternum and lightly brush from the crown to the center,” she adds. “Take it under your ear and pin it with an anvil to make sure you keep your voice in your crown.”
The 70s loved bees, that’s for sure. This half version was undoubtedly inspired by the iconic Brigitte Bardot, which was popular in the 60s, but people were still definitely talking about the aquatic goodness ten years later. But can you blame them? It’s clear that there is timeless magic going on here.
Scarves, scarves – anything you can tie in your hair – the ’70s (and ’80s) were all about this carefree, fun, hippie vibe. To be fair, so are we today. Look how cute Alana Morrison is in a scarf.
Chic ’70s Hairstyles That Will Always Be In Style
Ask anyone who was around in the ’70s and they’ll tell you it was a time of long, free-flowing locks that had dead ends. As Tardo says, “The glamor of ’70s hair continues the glamor and cool popularity of the iconic era.” And this style is nothing if not glamorous and cool.
When it comes to being totally hippie cool, there’s only one person we want to copy, and that’s Stevie Nicks. It’s part rocker chic in the Woodstock festival two-piece, like this long version of the classic ragtag we really like.
The lush hair of the 70s is back in the modern ring, and the leading role is played by curling irons. “I think the curtain call is so iconic and will be forever,” Scott said. For reconstruction, he recommends using a round brush with a lot of tension and a good blow dry. “I recommend keeping these pieces away from your face and warming up the brush. Then, after it cools down, apply a good volumizing spray.”
If you want a rocker vibe, check out Tina Turner. The singer is still known for rocking big sticks, but she kept it layered and smart in the ’70s.
The Best 70s Hairstyles With Timeless Appeal To Wear In 2023
Another trend that emerged in the 70s were short straight lines that simply kissed the browser. These tend to be thicker and more open than their smart Birkin counterparts, but also have varying amounts of body separation here and there. Hint we miss Ducky Tot’s 70’s Eagle.
Over time, this decade has seen a variety of skinny looks, and our absolute favorite is the skinny curl. In recent years, seen on Khadijah Red Thunder, Zendaya, Alanna Arrington and Sandra Oh, to name a few, the layered cut is complemented by effortless curls. Cut the bangs a little longer to “anticipate bounce and frizz as they dry,” says Scott.
We don’t know what it would be if baby braids—whether layered to frame the face or scattered throughout the hair—didn’t scream ’70s with all the bangs. “Spiders are fun and interesting,” Scott said. “I love when you create a classic braid that secures the head with a band, and when you take it out, it’s messy and loose. Attach it to the scene you want – you can place it wherever you want.”
Sleek, long and straight, it’s a comeback trend that Tardo noted: “Cher and her pure ’70s persona come right through,” noting that the Kardashians often endorse the look. “Ask the colorist for a rich brown gloss or clear gloss. This will enhance the shine of your hair and give it the perfect silky finish to make your middle parting dream come true. For a DIY option, Tardo recommends Clairol Natural Sense ($8).
How To Get ’70s Bangs
We can’t talk about ’70s hairstyles without mentioning Diana Ross. In a remarkable decade, Ross dominated her music career and became the first black woman to host the Academy Awards. Although she is known for many different hairstyles, her natural afro style has always been one of our favorites.
If anyone can rock a ’70s bob, it’s Ariana Grande. Full and voluminous is the only way to do a one-day pony, and the side part is just the cherry on top.
Meryl Streep proves once again that she can’t do anything, including her incredibly blonde hair from the 70s. During this decade, the actress rocked a natural look. She was very much the girl next door. What’s not to love? If ever there was a decade that represented fun and freedom in terms of style, it was the ’70s.
