Questions To Ask During Interview As Employer – Dear Matt: Do you have any interview tips? I’ve always read about how important it is for recent college graduates to ask the right interview questions, but I don’t know what questions to ask in a job interview. Matt: I will say this, I wish I had a list of job interview questions to ask when I was interviewing for an entry level job. Because it should not only help me ask the right questions for the interview, but also help me with my interview preparation and confidence.

Good news! Below is an extensive list of the best job interview questions to ask employers, featuring expert advice from America’s top corporate recruiters and mid-career management leaders from the nation’s top business schools.

Signs Of A Good Interview

The truth is, if you’re confident and ready to go into an interview, you can relax, be yourself, and shine.

But many job seekers, especially college graduates, are shy or awkward when they go to their first job interview. I was one of them and looking back on my early interviews, I was never asked the right questions because I wasn’t prepared for the right questions. How the employer sees you and your potential to succeed in the role and fit in with the team makes a big difference.

“Not asking can indicate a lack of interest and a missed opportunity to sell yourself,” says Susie Clark, director of undergraduate career services at Indiana’s Kelly School of Business. “It’s important to remember that an interview is a two-way street and they expect you to ask questions, so show that you’re prepared and interested in the role.

Corinne M. Snell, Ed.D., associate dean for student professional development at Temple University’s Fox School of Business, agrees. Prior to his current role, Snell worked in corporate America, serving in college liaison roles at Campbell’s Soup Company, Siemens Healthcare and Lutron Electronics.

“A certain level of spontaneity is expected in a job interview, but candidates should have a list of questions prepared in advance,” Snell said. “The worst thing is to say they don’t have any questions or to say something like, ‘Um, I’ve got everything covered.’

One of the biggest things for students or recent grads to remember is that just as a recruiter or hiring manager is interviewing people, they’re also interviewing potential employers, said Justin Bischoff, a talent acquisition consultant at Buffalo Wild Wings. A casual restaurant and sports bar franchise.

“Don’t ask about things that are important to you,” said the bishop. “It should be something that you think will stick with the employer for the long term.”

Try to keep the conversation going, the bishop said. For example, if you are interested in sales, ask something like, “Earlier in our interview you mentioned that one of the main focuses of this role is to increase sales in the restaurant, can you tell us more about that?”

Culture Fit Questions You Should Ask Before Accepting A Job

“I was also impressed by the candidates who did their research on the organization and the position before interviewing,” Bishop said. “By asking about things that are important to you and what you’ve learned, you can demonstrate the time and effort you put into joining the organization’s team.”

Snell puts it bluntly, saying, “Job seekers need to prepare for the moment when the recruiter turns the tables and asks, ‘What questions do you have for me?'”

That’s what’s surprising corporate employers today, says Asma Ennis, a talent consultant at Blue Cross, a health care provider in Minnesota. He leads college relations at Blue Cross and is one of the first people to interview/interview college graduates and entry-level employees who interview with the company.

Support job seekers/job seekers who ask about job challenges, says Anis. Employers love candidates who want a challenge and who want to know what it takes to succeed in the role. “It helped me understand his willingness to play certain roles,” Ennis said.

“These students have been graded on everything they’ve done over the last few years, no matter what,” Ennis said. “These millennials want to know where they stand, and I can appreciate that. It tells them they want to do well and be rewarded.”

The company’s job seekers are interested in the business, the strategic plan, how the company makes a difference and if the company is growing, “all big questions,” Ennis said. “It tells us that they care about the well-being of the organization and its future.”

Illegal Interview Questions Employers May Not Know They’re Asking

“Chances are there will be plenty of time to ask a lot of thin questions, so candidates should be ready and prepared for certain questions,” Snell said. “Interviews are a two-way street, and employers expect job seekers to come prepared with thoughtful and insightful questions.”

Remember this though – being attentive and insightful isn’t dependent on how much vacation time, salary, or benefits you get. This information will be reviewed over time.

1. Can you tell us about yourself and your career path? Yes – job seekers should ask the interviewer. This will allow you to learn more about the employer, what this person likes in the company, and you can create common interests to strengthen further relationships. “It’s all about building relationships, and showing genuine interest is important,” Clark said.

2. What is your reason for staying with this company, or why you joined it recently? These answers usually tell you about the work environment/company culture. “For many students and recent college graduates, company culture is an important decision-making criterion,” Clark said.

“When candidates ask provocative questions, it shows that they have solid communication skills, are genuinely interested in the opportunity, and are looking to make a long-term investment,” Bischoff said. Ultimately, asking the right questions will make this interview and the candidate memorable when it comes to hiring decisions.

Dara Warren, chief results officer at Penn Foster Education Group, said she’s asking questions about how new hires can impress employers:

Why this question: By asking this question, the job applicant is taking an interest in the company’s culture and commitment to employees and their career path, and is shaping their success first. “The first month at a new job is an important time to build the relationship between the employee and the employer, and the candidate wants to know that the company is a place where they can grow and mature,” says Warren. “Working with our employer partners, we’ve helped develop a mentoring program where new hires develop and strengthen their interpersonal skills in the workplace.”

Another good question, says Warn, is to ask, “How does your company encourage employees to collaborate/work as a team and show integrity and initiative?”

Important Questions To Ask In An Interview

Why this question: Questions from candidates indicate that they already have certain “soft skills” that are usually learned and improved once in the workforce. These students may have graduated from institutions that offer soft skills (or “power skills”) training in self-paced programs and advanced in developing critical work/life skills.

A good question shows that you’ve researched the role, the company and highlights your strengths. “It’s a signal to the employer that you’re very interested and passionate about the opportunity,” Clark says.

“I appreciate it when candidates take the last few minutes to talk about their interests and what skills and abilities will make an impact on the team,” Ennis said. “Don’t forget to smile and give a firm handshake.”
