“A certain level of spontaneity is expected in a job interview, but candidates should have a list of questions prepared in advance,” Snell said. “The worst thing is to say they don’t have any questions or to say something like, ‘Um, I’ve got everything covered.’

He leads college relations at Blue Cross and is one of the first people to interview/interview college graduates and entry-level employees who interview with the company.

2. What is your reason for staying with this company, or why you joined it recently? These answers usually tell you about the work environment/company culture. “For many students and recent college graduates, company culture is an important decision-making criterion,” Clark said.

3. What skills or characteristics contributed to your success here? This is an opportunity for you to highlight the strengths associated with one of these skills if you have not already done so.

4. I learned a lot today and am even more excited about this opportunity, so is there anything else I can provide or questions I can answer about my ability to do this job? “It shows that you want the job and you want to eliminate the remaining concerns,” Clark said.

Ultimately, asking the right questions will make this interview and the candidate memorable when it comes to hiring decisions.

Dara Warren, chief results officer at Penn Foster Education Group, said she’s asking questions about how new hires can impress employers:

Another good question, says Warn, is to ask, “How does your company encourage employees to collaborate/work as a team and show integrity and initiative?”

Why this question: Questions from candidates indicate that they already have certain “soft skills” that are usually learned and improved once in the workforce. These students may have graduated from institutions that offer soft skills (or “power skills”) training in self-paced programs and advanced in developing critical work/life skills.

A good question shows that you’ve researched the role, the company and highlights your strengths. “It’s a signal to the employer that you’re very interested and passionate about the opportunity,” Clark says.

“I appreciate it when candidates take the last few minutes to talk about their interests and what skills and abilities will make an impact on the team,” Ennis said. “Don’t forget to smile and give a firm handshake.”
