It’s no secret: almost all of our favorite celebrities have had extensions at one point or another. But without endless funds and professionals on our side, an extension seemed out of reach and impractical for the rest of us for a long time. Look out for clip-on clips: pre-cut lengthening strips that attach directly to your real hair strands at the roots to transform your look in minutes.

Hair clips are a great way to enhance your hairstyle; They provide serious versatility, are easy to use and reusable (a good set of pins can last for years). are you interested? I was like that too.

After much research and consultation, I received an impeccable set of pins from the approved Hidden Crown brand. I called celebrity hairdresser Laura Raggett and got down to business. Read on to find out everything you need to know about DIY clip-in hair extensions.

Laura Rugetti is a celebrity hairdresser and hair extension specialist based in Los Angeles with over 15 years of experience. Her clients include Teddy Mellencamp, Tori Spelling, Amelia Hamlin, Noah Cyrus, Kathy Hilton and Lisa Rinna.

This Is How You Wear Clip In Extensions Without Damaging Your Hair

No two sets of pins are the same, so arrange all your items and think about where they will go before you start. In my case, there were five clips in total – two thin, two wide and one large. Rugetti suggested that I use two thin strands on the sides of my hair: a wider one at the bottom of my head and a larger one at the top of my head.

By the way, in case you’re wondering, my extensions were in shade #5/24, which is described as a light taupe with golden highlights. Although they looked a little light in the packaging, you’ll find that they pair beautifully with each other.

If you have one, a second mirror can come in handy when working on the back of your head.

With the back end of a rat tail comb, trim your hair in one line from the middle of your ear to the middle of your skull. It is important that the line is as straight as possible, so an additional mirror will come in handy here. Pin a section above to separate it from the rest of your hair, and repeat the same on the other side. You can also cut out the sections below to keep things clean and simple.

What Are The Most Natural Looking Hair Extensions

For faster and easier results, Raggett suggests placing a finger behind the middle of the ear on either side of the head and drawing a straight line across the scalp until the two fingers meet. Part your hair over your fingers and secure with a clip.

Hold one of the medium extensions close to the part you just created to see where it should go. It should be in the center, not covering the ears. In this area, clean the bottom and then touch the root to keep the extensions stable. Lightly spray the affected area with hairspray.

Make sure all expansion clamps are open. Apply a small amount of hairspray to each exposed strand. Then, holding both ends of the extension, pull it towards the back of your head and feel for the piece you made earlier. First go in and attach the middle brace. Once attached, return your hands to the ends of the piece and pin them together before inserting the two outer clips into the sides of the section and closing the clips.

Part your hair about two inches above the barrette. It should be around the tips of the ears and temples. You need to create as straight a line as possible and make sure the first extension is completely covered by the layer of hair.

While holding the second medium pin, move it to the new piece to find the best spot. Again, you want it to be in the center without covering your ears. Clean the area, touch the root and lightly spray with hairspray.

After all extension clips are open, spray each one before use. As before, you need to place the extension at the back of your head and hold both ends of it. Once you find the optimal placement (these clips should not overlap the previous ones), go in first and attach the middle clip. Once secured, place your hands back on the ends of the piece and pull firmly before inserting the two outer clamps into the sides of the section and closing the clamps.

Release the hair from the clip. Create a new strand about an inch above the end, making sure to select an area where there is enough hair above it to completely cover the extension. Press the top half back.

After filming the biggest clip, pause it to find the best spot. It should be centered around the crown without getting too close to the sides. Clean the area, touch the root and lightly spray with hairspray.

Reasons You Should Use Clip In Hair Extensions For Thin Hair

After all extension clips are open, spray each one before use. As before, you need to place the extension at the back of your head and hold both ends of it. Since this piece has four brackets, attach the two middle brackets first. Once secured, place your hands back on the ends of the piece and pull firmly before inserting the two outer clamps into the sides of the section and closing the clamps.

Release the top bracket and clean the top thoroughly. At the back, make sure none of the top hair is attached to the braid. If yes, adjust if necessary. This is where a hand mirror comes in handy to ensure full coverage of the extensions. This is a great time to fix bugs before the job is done.

Part your hair on one side of your head by pulling back the middle of your brow. As before, you want as straight a line as possible with enough hair to completely cover the extension.

Take one of the small rigs and lift it up to find the best spot. This can be a little trickier than the previous placement because you need to make sure the extension is far enough away to blend in smoothly with the rest of the hair, but you want to avoid overlapping too much with the medium hair. This meant that the side section had to be placed a little further than intended. Clean the area, touch the root and lightly spray with hairspray.

After all extension clips are open, spray each one before use. Position the extension where you want it, holding it firmly at both ends. This piece only has two fasteners, so just snap and fasten one at a time.

Let your hair down and style it as needed. As you can see below, I had a small spot on my head. To fix this, I simply cut the problem area and carefully removed the top part of the hair stuck in it.

After all the problem areas have been treated, gently comb the hair with your fingers to bring the strands together. Here you can do both extensions and hairstyle as you wish, if you have not already done so (straightened, curled, etc.). According to Rugetti, the hair clip is an easy-to-use barrette that can be clipped onto natural hair piece by piece. Each braid is equipped with small, strong clips that securely attach to the hair, providing a comfortable and secure hold throughout the day.
