As the humid weather approaches, many of us opt for low-maintenance washes, and regardless of hair type or texture, the high ponytail is always a winner. But while celebrity stylists and beauty influencers might have you believe that it only takes a moment to rock a ponytail, getting a ponytail that looks and feels great isn’t really that easy…
The Best Ponytail For Your Face Shape
There are hundreds of ponytail hacks on TikTok, but Kirsty Hollick (who loves hair tips and tutorials on the app @the.bridalist) has appeared to show how to get a summer ponytail in no time. or no glitter. The best part is that it only requires a simple swipe and there is no need to use messy hair clips, hair bands (the elastic hair ties favored by professional hairdressers) or hair clips and product. Even better, it suits your hair type, thick, thin or medium; you don’t have to be as tall as Rapunzel for it to work.
The ‘perfect tail’ is simple. First, you’ll need a scrunchie, but you can also use simple hair ties if you like. The trick is to use a denman brush like the Den 11 Large Paddle Styling Brush to brush the hair into place.
Then, remove the curling iron and double curl your hair. You may need medium or large curls (depending on the thickness of your hair) to reach the second round.
Before pulling your hair into the scrunchie for the last time, use your free hand to separate the ponytail into two sections. Flip the top part over your head so it’s out of the way, then tie the end of the scrunchie to the bottom part of the ponytail. This will leave the top of your hair free, but work towards the bottom of your hair and use your fingers to apply the foundation.

What you will get is a voluminous, sleek ponytail that won’t fall as the day goes on. Depending on the finished result you want, you can take small sections of hair for a frame effect or hold the lost strands.

I have very thick hair and clothes that drag all day affect everything I wear, especially the ponytail, so I tried this. Surprisingly, it’s not as weird as you think and I tried it a second time. The first time the scrunchie was too small, but I chose a large silk version that worked to give it a big high pony à la Ariana Grande. I can attest that it works on medium length hair as well, and because of the extra support from the bottom part of my hair, my ponytail lasted longer than a regular updo style.
I’ve found that this hack works much better on day-old hair than freshly washed hair, as each lift requires a certain amount of hold. However, a dry shampoo like Batiste Dry Shampoo Original Clean & Classic, $4.99, or a non-sticky texture spray like Ouidad Going Up! A spritz of Root Texture Alcohol, £34, or Christine Es Dry Texture Spray, £12, will ensure just the right amount of hold when sprayed on roots, lengths and ends. Avoid ends and hair so your ponytail can move.
