This is an important step in determining which style of hat will look best on you. We have to start with key information, so be prepared to read a lot! Then we will talk about how I can help you create the perfect hat.

To determine your face shape, you need to take a tape measure, stand in front of a mirror and measure the width and length of your face. Don’t forget to take care of your bangs if you have them.

Sophie’s best tip: Don’t have a tape measure? don’t worry! Just use eyeliner or lip liner and outline your face in the mirror – use something permanent of course!

Once you know your features, you’re ready to move on to the next step… choosing the right hat for your face shape!

The rule here is to choose a hat that helps your face look longer. Choose a hat with a tall crown and narrow brim. Any hat that has long brims, tilts away from the face, or generally adds to your height will be a good choice for you.

Sophie’s top tip: Consider a feather hat. This adds height and instant movement to the hat… they don’t even have to be real fur! I made drawings with silk or felt “feathers”.

To soften the angles of your face, choose a hat with a round or oval crown and a wider brim. Slightly tilt the tips down to add a touch of femininity. Birdcage veil will also help soften the shape of your face. Asymmetry works if you have a square face shape, but try to avoid long straight lines and choose hats that soften your look.

If you have a wide forehead and a sharp chin, you have a heart-shaped face.

Almost any style of hat will fit your face, but try to avoid very small hats or headpieces because they will accentuate your forehead and make it look wider. If the top of your face is hidden by rare extra width, it can also accentuate your chin. Focus on medium-length fringes and asymmetrical styles to make the most of your features.

Sophie Fun Fact: All these sailors have the same width of brim. Resizing the crown will change the length of the rim and can offer suitable opportunities for different face shapes.

If you have an oval face, your forehead is slightly wider than your chin and your cheekbones are slightly wider than your forehead.

You have a chance! Almost any style of hat will look great on an oval face. Try experimenting with different styles and see what you like best! Don’t limit yourself and try everything – after all, isn’t that fun!?

Sophie’s biggest tip: Consider your height. If you are very tall, a wide hat can give balance, but if you are short, it can weigh you out.

Do you have an oblong shaped face? The oval face is versatile, very similar to the oval face shape, and it works well with many different hat styles.

To balance your face, you can choose a wide-brimmed hat or a hat with a lot of volume on top. Remember to keep the proportions in mind. If the hat is too big, your face will look even longer. But if it is too small, it will look disproportionate. Try different styles and find the one that works best for you!

When it comes to wearing a hat, there are no hard and fast rules on which side to sit on. Women’s hats were traditionally worn on the right side of the head (for a very old reason – irrelevant to this blog!). Because of this, most milliners born on this side, limit the options normally available in high street shops – and the practice continues.

These days, however, it’s all about personal preference, comfort, and what goes best with your hairstyle. So when choosing the right hat for your face shape, it is also worth considering the characteristics of your hairstyle; long or short, fringe or not, and even if they style your hair.

This is why some people like to wear their hats on the left side, while others prefer to wear them on the right side. There’s even a dead center option, which has become a big trend on the Australian racing scene in recent years.

As much as possible I try to design hats that can be worn on both sides. Of course, if you are getting a custom made hat, this is always a decision that is fully explored during your consultation.

The most important thing is to wear the hat in a way that feels natural and makes you feel confident and comfortable. So don’t worry about the old rules of etiquette. Just choose the side that’s best for you and enjoy your stylish accessory!

Sophie’s top tip: My general tip is to put the hat on the same place you parted. This allows for more styling and can balance the overall look…although it’s not a hard and fast rule! (In the studio with clients, I often ask clients to try on designs on both sides – just make sure we have the right one for them!)
