Since they were all scaled up, I didn’t have to worry too much about what I had in the bottom half. As I wrote in this post about preparing for a video interview, you should focus on how your upper body looks. I chose to wear blouses and jackets for these interviews. But what about your hair? Have you thought about how to wear your hair for an interview?
It’s funny, I always think about how I wear my hair in my industry. You see, I don’t really fit into my job. I’ve been told, “You don’t look like you have a Ph.D., you’re too pretty, you’re too stylish.” I don’t say that, other people tell me that. To be honest, I personally find it a bit sexist, but I’m trying to tone down my femininity. One way to achieve this is to wear your hair as conservatively as possible.
How Should You Wear Your Hair For An Interview
So, before I tell you that you should only wear a high bun or a low bun, there is one catch. My point is that how you wear your hair in an interview probably depends a lot on the industry you’re interviewing for. I work in a conservative industry. Most of the women I work with don’t consciously dress their bodies. They rarely wear makeup and definitely don’t look too stylish or elegant. Of course, there are exceptions. There are many women who dress well, take care of their appearance and look feminine. But there are many who do not.

I’ve learned a lot over the years about how people in my industry perceive me. I’m not the “norm” in my line of work, so I need to tone down my looks and femininity. Also, I stand out more than the average woman because I’m 5’7″ without heels. My heels are 6 inches tall. My size and general appearance can intimidate people, I get that. I’m also a very direct person, which adds to the fear.
I hope you don’t misunderstand me. I don’t think my looks, size, or straightness make me look threatening or intimidating at all. If I were a man, I wouldn’t even think about these things. But as a woman I do it. This means that how you wear your hair in an interview is one more thing I need to consider to eliminate the intimidation factor.
Here’s what I do. I recently went through four different job interviews. Like me, there are many stages in the interview process throughout your career. The first round was a video interview with about 10 people. Everyone is still working from home due to COVID, so I had a video full of different faces. For this interview, I pulled my hair into a very low ponytail so they couldn’t tell what kind of hair I had. It’s completely gone from my face and pulled tightly into a low ponytail.
Personally, I think a low ponytail or bun is the best choice for a first interview. Personally, I think this is not only very professional and conservative, but also the best way to downplay femininity. This decision also depends heavily on your industry. If you’re not sure how people in your industry dress or style their hair, I’d go for a more conservative look. If you work in a creative industry, I would strongly advise you to consider something more creative.

During the second interview, I decided to let my hair down. I made big wavy curls. I personally find that when I wear my hair straight it seems like I put a lot less effort into my hair than when I wear it wavy. Since my hair is currently darker, it looked professional, but this time I showed more of my femininity.
My main reason for initially going conservative and then reducing it the second time was on purpose. I wanted to make sure I passed the second interview, so her first impression of me was conservative. Then the second time they can better understand who I really am. The second time I dressed less conservatively. Since this is done through zooming, I myself was a bit more relaxed than I would have been in an in-person interview.
Whatever you choose, make sure you don’t constantly touch or play with your hair during the interview. During the second interview, I touched my hair too many times to push it out of my face. Personally, I find it very distracting during an interview. In hindsight, I should have worn it open or semi-open. I would do that next time. Once you get the job, you can wear your hair however you want. These tips are just to make sure you make progress in the interview.
How you wear your hair for an interview depends on many things. In most cases, all you need to know is your industry and how people perceive you in your industry. If you know that, you know what fits. I have very long hair now. I know that in a not-so-feminine industry, long hair is seen as ultra-feminine. So I try to ease it by wearing it. But if you have short hair or shoulder length hair, I think you can definitely go for other options. Wearing it open or half up is probably a great option for you too. Pull your hair into a low ponytail just above the nape of your neck with an elastic that matches the color of your curls. Once you’ve secured it, untie a few strands of hair from the elastic and tease a few strands in the front for a messy finish. Finally, tie the ribbon with a bow around the hair tie.
Brush your hair back a bit to add some volume and twist it into a perfect little bun at the top of your head. Secure the bun with bobby pins and a spritz of hairspray, then tie a ribbon around it so the bow rests just below the base of the bun.
Do you wear your hair down? Add interest to your style by twisting two small strands of hair in the front and tying them with a rubber band at the back of your head. Then just tie your ribbon on it and you’re done!

Apply a texturizing spray to the curls (this will give the braid a better hold) and pull all the hair to one side of the head. Divide your hair into two equal parts and start from the back. Take a small strand of hair and pull it over the part of the hair you took it from. Then pull the other end out from under the front of the hair.
Repeat this process with the front of your hair – take a small section of hair, place it on top of the front of your hair and under the back of your hair. Repeat the process alternately on the front and back of the hair until you reach the end of the braid. Then secure it with a clear rubber band and tie a ribbon over it!
