Clothes To Wear To An Interview Female – Virtual interviews (and teleworking) are virtually non-existent until 2020, and we all know what happened in 2020 that made them a mainstay of our society. It can be difficult to strike the right balance between professionalism and convenience when working from home, and it gets even more complicated when it comes to interviews! In typical face-to-face interviews, we want to show our best, and that’s no different from virtual interviews. It all starts with our outfits!

Whether you’re a recent graduate preparing for a virtual interview with graduate schools/programs and choosing the best fit OR a recent graduate ready to enter the real world (congratulations to both of you!!!), I’ve created three relatively timeless looks that I’ll wear for a virtual interview. Below, you’ll find all of my tips for creating confidence-boosting outfits for your next virtual interview!

When dressing for a virtual interview, you want to wear clothes that you would wear for a regular in-person interview. I know; it’s hard! Haha. After a few months of dressing up to work from home, I’ve gotten used to working from home in comfortable/active clothing. Fortunately, since you’re doing a Zoom interview, you can wear comfortable underwear—don’t choose pants that are tight, too tight, or uncomfortable to wear.

Wear real pants for a virtual interview if you have to get up! I’m an expert on “mullet suits” – polite on top, comfortable on bottom – but you definitely want to wear REALLY comfortable pants, not joggers or leggings. Wearing the right clothes will often help you focus on the interview and worry less about someone seeing your pajamas.

I recently added a new pair of pontes to my Universal Standard wardrobe and I love them! Universal Standard is the most plus-size clothing brand I know of – their sizes follow a bell curve, so an average woman (size 18-20) will fit an average size, and they offer sizes up to 4XS (size 00-0) and 4XL (size 38-40). I’m usually petite and ordered these pants in sizes 3XS (2-4). They’re tight around my waist where I carry my weight, but it’s not that uncomfortable!

I have a fun “basic twist” white lace top for this outfit; a simple black and white outfit is classic, especially with black flats (I don’t usually wear shoes inside, but I can make an exception, again, so I can focus and take the interview seriously). Since Zoom interviews focus on your upper half, I chose an interesting pair of earrings!

Use colors that you like and make you feel confident in your virtual interview (and don’t clash with your background)!

What Colors You Should (and Shouldn’t) Wear To A Job Interview

Neutral is definitely king, if that’s what you’re most comfortable with! As long as you don’t blend in with your backdrop, then you can’t go wrong with a great white blouse (see above), light blue or gray or even button-down black!

Here I have a suit that looks like a suit but isn’t: the blazer is an old shirt but it just so happens to be a perfect match with my sweatpants! This virtual interview outfit couldn’t be easier to put together and has a huge impact. For extra fun and personality, I wore a shirt with a bright red pattern underneath.

If you decide to wear a blazer over your jacket, make sure you choose one that fits comfortably underneath the blazer. You don’t want to be distracted and constantly tweak your outfit during the interview. Consider sleeve length and thickness for the best fit! (I strongly recommend trying out all of the options first, but most importantly, find the jacket and combination that work best for your interview!)

To complete this outfit, I took the couple’s golden suits; even when no one saw me, the extra “hello” they gave me turned into an interview. And I finished it off with different earrings! I tuck my hair back so you can see (and keep my hair from getting tangled!).

What To Wear To An Interview: 2023 Guide

Your virtual interview doesn’t necessarily require formal attire, especially if you’re interviewing as a recent graduate. Feel free to be as formal as you’d like, but depending on your schedule (or job or industry if you’re interviewing for a job), you can dress smartly to end the interview!

For this outfit, I took a tailor-made shirt and tucked it halfway into dark (comfortable and stretchy) loose-fitting jeans (read reviews for skinny jeans!). The key to this outfit is the tailored top. Boyfriend-style oversized shirts are all the rage right now, but they’re not entirely appropriate for a virtual interview. If the sleeves fit snugly, you can even add a third piece, such as a fleece jacket!

My navy blue apartments make me very happy, which will positively affect my mood for an interview. (I’ve always believed in always wearing what you love!) And since so many people are interested in striped tops, I chose to keep my earrings simple and studded.
