I have trained many women in New York and developed this fitness program to help women build muscle. This program is designed for beginners, but you can modify it for more advanced workouts by using dumbbells or heavier weights to add more weight.

Whether you’re looking to improve your fitness in a specific area—like butt progression, stronger arms, or your core—you can do it by following the principles of this women’s workout routine to build muscle at home. First, we’ll go over some muscle-building basics, then dive into a sample workout program you can try at home.

You only need a few weights for your training program, preferably with at least two weight options, one for the first two weeks of the program and a heavier weight for the last two weeks. For advanced lifting, you can use a barbell or heavier weights.

If you want to build muscle, there are some basic training principles to help you stay on track and make progress. Building muscle is often called hypertrophy in the fitness world, which means training to build muscle (this is related but different from training to get stronger).

Complete proteins contain all the essential amino acids that the body needs, while incomplete proteins contain some but not all of the essential amino acids.

We also like to use high intensity interval training (HIIT) because it is associated with greater fat burning and increased endurance during recovery.

We recommend doing at least 4 strength training sessions per week followed by a short HIIT session. It’s also great to stay active the other 3 days, go for a bike ride with friends, go for a walk after dinner, or do yoga or light stretching.

This recommendation is also consistent with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. These guidelines recommend at least 150 minutes per week and 300 minutes per week of moderate-intensity exercise.

In addition to avoiding exercises that use incorrect form, we also recommend avoiding heavy cardio programs. Cardio has its place in your routine, but it’s not the best way to reach your goals.

Before LIIFT4, ChaLEAN Extreme was our favorite strength workout! This strength training program includes 3 phases to help your muscles figure it out!

With this program, you lift heavy weights for 8-12 reps 3 times a week, and each workout is about 35-45 minutes.

If you like variety, you’ll love Autumn Calabrese’s 80 unique workouts in 80 Day Obsession. With this training you will train 6 times a week for 45-60 minutes.

Unlike LIIFT4 and ChaLEAN Extreme, you’ll be doing more compound movements every day. For example, you can do a lunge while lifting weights overhead to press your shoulders.
