Disco Makeup 101: 20 Modern Ways To Wear The Timeless Trend
Smaragd Elitu is a writer. His work has appeared in numerous publications including Essence, BET and Elite Daily.
The 1970s were an iconic era for more reasons than can be written. Along with the monumental rise of disco music, the entertainment industry has exploded with stunning beauty trends led by a host of household names. To this day, people are still trying to recreate Diana Ross’s voluminous lashes, Donna Summer’s intense red nails, and Farrah Fawcett’s signature curled updo.
“The ’70s was an amazing decade for fashion and beauty inspiration,” says makeup artist Ashley Rebecca. We can’t agree with her sentiment. In fact, some of our favorite celebs—Sweetie and Rihanna—recently paid homage to the buzz of yesteryear with ’70s-inspired glam. And who can blame them? Flipping through nostalgic photos can make anyone want to go back in time.
From draping and playful shades to long nails with whimsical designs, we spoke to several beauty experts to find out why these ’70s trends should be on your radar and how you can achieve the look at home.
Top 4 Tiktok Beauty Trends Worth Trying 2023
Hairstylists Mischa G and Cheri Amore agree that the ’70s look was natural, casual and chic. “When it comes to ’70s hair, it’s about freedom through self-expression,” says hairstylist Misha G, describing a time of more relaxed beauty. “It’s timeless and never goes out of style,” adds Amor.
According to Misha, the mentioned hairstyle is a good example. “The Czech is the perfect cut if you want it
, but with minimal effort, he tells us. – In good condition with the initial cut, you can grow in a few months. If necessary, hand-style short bangs and sideburns, leaving the rest of the hair loose.’
You might think that recreating Farrah Fawcett’s signature curls would be impossible. However, Misha quickly dismisses this thought with her quick home remedy. “Put on some hot rollers and let them set for an hour (or longer, depending on your hair type),” says the stylist. “Get out the curlers, brush your hair, and you’ll easily have a set that lasts for days.”
Top 70s Makeup Looks For This Fall
The Afro has long been a cultural and political statement for iconic black women such as activist Angela Davis, actress Pam Grier, and singer Nina Simone. Today, it still represents pride and beauty, and luckily for us, it’s easy to get to. Below, Cheri Amore walks us through the steps to getting the perfect look.
For those with curly hair, Misha recommends “letting your curls curl” like Chaka Khan.
For those with straight hair, Misha suggests framing the face by adding a slight twist to the bun. To do this, hairdressers advise to do the following after completing the morning procedure: “Sweat your hair with a curler to set the hairstyle. Let it set until it is dry.’
For Misha, the most important thing to remember when trying to live out her 70s fantasy is the health of her hair. “If you take steps to keep your hair healthy, nourished and happy, your hair will take care of itself,” she insists.
How To Embrace ’70s Inspired Disco Glam In Hair And Make Up
Many makeup artists agree that looking back over decades is the perfect way to find new inspiration, especially if you want to experiment and have fun.
“In the 1970s, colorful eyeshadow, soft blush and bare lips were all the rage,” explains Melody Reynolds, founder of Elate Cosmetics. “The key is to draw attention to the eyes, so think colour, shine and lots of lashes. These days, when we’re all wearing masks, they’re well tolerated.” Next, Reynolds and Rebecca offer step-by-step tips on how to do disco makeup.
You want to start with your complexion makeup. For wasted results, choose a foundation with a glossy finish. Rebecca swears by Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation ($65). Next, you’ll want to move on to your eyeshadow. Choosing the right eye shadow is key when recreating the ’70s look. To stay on trend, choose palettes with dreamy pastels or bold jewel tones. To add an extra touch of disco, don’t forget to highlight your eyes with glitter or glitter pigments like Lemonhead LA Spacepaste ($22).
When it comes to lashes, bigger is better. False eyelashes were all the rage during this era, so there’s no better time to pull out your brightest false lashes and take over the room. To make your eyes really pop, apply mascara to your upper and lower lashes. Reynolds swears by Elate Essential Mascara ($30). I highly recommend applying lower lashes.

Finally, you’ll want to add some shine to your cheekbones. To add a bit of disco sparkle, apply a shimmery highlighter like RMS Beauty Living Luminizer ($38) to the tops of your cheekbones.
Evelyn Lim, nail artist and Paintbox Master Educator, explains that there’s no better time to play around with fun and playful nail art. “More and more people are expressing themselves through the color, texture, length and shape of their nails,” she tells us.
When it comes to the ’70s nail trend, Lim believes there’s no right or wrong way to achieve the look. Instead, he insists, the hardest part is choosing which design to rock. Below you will find some images for inspiration.
This bright manicure is completely reminiscent of the 70s. Wavy organic shapes and warm shades make this nail design so interesting.

You can never go wrong with a colorful manicure. Seeing the colors of the rainbow immediately puts us in a good mood.
This floral manicure took us back to the 70s. We love everything about this nail art, from the whimsical floral design to the sparkling glitter.
To achieve this fun and creative look at home, Lim highly recommends purchasing a line adjustment tool for precision. She also suggests buying nail polishes in earthy shades, including latte brown, mustard, chocolate brown, pearl and mauve, if you’re going for a real mani.
It is important to note that there are not many colors and shapes strongly associated with time. However, Lim encourages everyone to dare to be different, adding a new twist to old beauty. Ashley Rebecca is a makeup artist based in New York and is constantly contributing to makeup, skin care, and hair.
If you’re interested in disco-themed makeup, you’ve come to the right place. Twiggy’s glittery lids and lashes create the disco vibe we could want and make a dynamic duo when paired together (even if you keep them still). We’ve rounded up some stunning disco makeup looks that you’ll want to recreate every day, from shimmer to glitter and everything in between.
Tiny moons and stars in a sea of heavy glitter makeup create this gorgeous disco eye. Apply the gloss in an upward motion from the lash line to the tail of the brow to create a lifted look. These details are not very suitable for a night at the disco.
We’re getting the whole Twiggy vibe on this one, and we’re totally here for it. Mini rhinestones and crystals line the inner rim and upper inner crease, while liquid liner and false lashes set the whole look on fire. Eyeko Eye Do Easy Stroke Eyeliner ($7) helps you get those clean, pristine lines.
